Health Issues in Pekingese Dogs: What Every Owner Should Know

The Pekingese is a charming and regal toy breed with a long history dating back to ancient China. While these small yet sturdy dogs make wonderful companions, they are prone to certain health issues that every owner should be aware of. Understanding these potential concerns can help ensure your Pekingese lives a long, happy, and healthy life.

Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome

One of the most common health concerns in Pekingese dogs is Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome (BAS). Due to their flat-faced (brachycephalic) structure, they often experience breathing difficulties. Symptoms include snoring, wheezing, and difficulty breathing, especially in hot or humid weather. To help manage this condition, keep your Pekingese in a cool environment, avoid excessive exercise in the heat, and consult a veterinarian if breathing issues worsen.

Eye Problems

The Pekingese has large, prominent eyes that make them susceptible to various eye conditions, including:

  • Corneal ulcers – Caused by trauma or excessive dryness, leading to pain and potential vision loss.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – A genetic condition that can lead to blindness.
  • Entropion – A condition where the eyelids roll inward, causing irritation and damage to the eye surface. Routine eye exams and gentle cleaning can help prevent serious complications.

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

Pekingese dogs have a long back and a compact frame, making them prone to intervertebral disc disease. This condition can cause pain, difficulty walking, and in severe cases, paralysis. To reduce the risk, avoid activities that put excessive strain on their spine, such as jumping off furniture. If your Pekingese shows signs of back pain, seek veterinary care promptly.

Heart Disease

Pekingese are prone to heart conditions such as Mitral Valve Disease (MVD), which affects the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently. Symptoms include coughing, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. Regular veterinary check-ups can help detect heart issues early and improve your pet’s quality of life with appropriate treatment.

Obesity

Due to their small stature, Pekingese dogs are at risk of obesity, which can exacerbate other health conditions like breathing difficulties, joint problems, and heart disease. Maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular, low-impact exercise is essential for their overall well-being.

Skin and Coat Issues

The Pekingese’s luxurious double coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting and skin infections. They are also prone to skin fold dermatitis, especially around the face, where moisture and bacteria can accumulate. Regular cleaning of skin folds and proper grooming will help prevent irritation and infections.

Heat Sensitivity

Due to their brachycephalic nature and thick coat, Pekingese dogs are highly susceptible to heatstroke. Always ensure they have access to shade, water, and a cool environment, particularly during warm weather. Avoid strenuous exercise in hot conditions, and watch for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting and lethargy.

While Pekingese dogs are prone to several health issues, proactive care and regular veterinary check-ups can help prevent or manage many of these conditions. As a responsible owner, being aware of these common health risks allows you to provide the best possible care for your beloved companion. With proper attention and preventive measures, your Pekingese can enjoy a long, healthy, and happy life.
